I Wanna ROCK Right Now!!!

There’s an old saying: “It’s not where you’re from, but where you’re at”. And the more that I search internally for my own purpose, I find that it is precisely where you are from that sets the tone for where you are “at”. In fact everything you need to know is resting just inside of you; where it has been from the beginning. And it is through the examination of your initial surroundings that will guide you to where you are going. It is this realization that gave me true appreciation for Beverly Bond’s 2012 Black Girls Rock presentation, which aired last night.

Being at a point in my life where I am more than ready for change, I was extremely inspired by each of the award recipients. And as I listened to each of their acceptance speeches, I began to notice that the great things they are doing and were being recognized for was based out of something that happened in their beginning; where they came from. For example, M.A.D. Award recipient Yasmine Arrington was headed to college and her father was incarcerated. While she is fortunate enough to be enrolled as a student at Elon University, she recognized that other children of incarcerated parents, may not be as fortunate. So, she founded DC based ScholarCHIPS, an organization that offers scholarships and college prep to children of incarcerated parents.

Janelle Monae showed us that wearing a uniform just isn’t so bad. She wears hers as an ode to her mom who was a janitor, her stepdad who was an employee at the post office and her biological father who was a trashman. She noticed that each of her parents wore uniforms, and that they were examples to her of hard-workers. As she accepted the Young, Gifted and Black Award, she said that wearing her uniform, (her signature tuxedo), is a reminder that she has work to do. And that work includes using her music to inspire others. Her acceptance speech was emotional and moving. It also showed me that whether you start out high or low, there is something so valuable, from your beginning, that you can grab onto that will propel you to greatness.

Susan L. Taylor is a beacon of light, AND a fountain of inspiration…

Susan L. Taylor spent 27 years as Editor In Chief of Essence Magazine. During which time, she inspired us to greatness with all of the beauty featured in each monthly edition. As she accepted her Inspiration Award and spoke of the importance of finding your own style, she said her wish is that we will be able to give birth to the genius within us. She also spoke of the importance of service and her mentoring program National CARES Mentoring Movement. She ended with a single sentence: Hands that serve are holier than lips that pray…

Alicia Keys in one word was: Fiirrreeee!!! Her performance was phenomenal. But I must say that what inspired me most was simply one sentence she said during the speech she gave as she so graciously accepted the Rock Star Award. She said, “If I could make a pledge to all the black girls who are rocking around the world. Everything that you want to be, you already are; and you are simply on the path to discovering it…”

Needless to say, I enjoyed watching the awards ceremony, and hope that you are inspired today, just as I was last night. It’s at times like these that I just can’t wait to be great. I mean, I Wanna ROCK RIGHT NOW!!!

These Are All Photos of ME!
I've Accepted My Voluptuous Curves And I Only Wear What Looks Nice On Me...

I have been a thick girl for my whole and entire life. Wide hips, thick thighs, and round bottom. My “B” cup breasts bloomed to a “C” cup in the late 90′s, but once I had my first daughter they grew into DD’s. Needless to say, once my size 12/14/16 body expanded to an 18/20, I immediately began to withdraw from fashion. I was at a loss because the items that I was used to wearing no longer fit. And the stores where I traditionally shopped, did not carry sizes that accommodated my new shape. I must also say that plus size catch-alls such as Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant, Avenue and August Max Woman’s clothing lines were too big for me. So, I found myself in the lackluster space of “in between”; you know too big for misses, but not big enough for woman’s. It was an awful time for me because my sense of style didn’t change, my size did.

Fast-forward five years, and I lost 42 pounds, and came down to a size 14W. Although I lost weight, I still found myself in the same position: too big for misses, and too small for plus sizes because my measurements were off. For a girl whose breasts were my size, designers expect my back to be wider, and because my hips are wide, it is assumed that my waist is also. Sooooo not true! So, I continued on my quest to find the perfect clothing for me.

These Are All Photos of ME!
I’ve Accepted My Voluptuous Curves And I Only Wear What Looks Nice On Me…

Being a plus-sized woman, I know two things: (1) big girls dressed in too big clothes creates an even bigger silhouette; and (2) one must dress in the size they are NOW; not the size the used to be, nor the size their gonna be (one day). And it was those two things that led me on my quest to find the perfect items that fit me! Surprisingly enough, I’ve found several designers that design fashionably for plus size women, and I’ll be featuring those here!!!

That said, I’d like to welcome you to my new segment XXXtra FLYY. I will feature items for curvy and plus-sized women who are FLYY and on the move! Need something to wear, no worries log onto uponflyy.com and click on the XXXtra FLYY tab to see what we’ve got for you!!!

Birthday cake Cake CAKE CAKE…

Today, I turned 35 years old. I am both excited and scared at the same time. This is a big day for me, because this is the turning point. Either I’ll choose to keep on this same road that I am currently on and take the time to Dream a bit more, OR I’ll choose to go ahead and DO a lot more. I know. I know. This sounds truly un-Virgo like of me, you know, to actually take the time to dream, but if you know anything about Virgos then you know that we are the ultimate thinkers, as well as, consumate worriers.

Having said that, I think I’ll go with the latter, and DO SOMETHING!!! Besides, I’ve already taken the first step by getting back UPONFLYY dot com!

There’s nothing like a little birthday gift, and we all love a little trinket, so I’ll start by sharing a few of my favorite things.

First up, is Fancy Footwork. You’ll never catch me wearing flats, and you definitely won’t see me rocking a pair of Ugg boots. HOWEVER, upon seeing these, I may have to seriously reconsider…

Monogram Classic Tall Boot (Chestnut $205) neimanmarcus.com

You can’t blame a girl for loving to see her own name in lights!!!

Platinum Blonde Is My Signature Hue…

There’s just something about turning 35 that makes me want to get all dressed up… IN A FLOOR-LENGTH GOWN!!! And the strangest thing is, I want to wear it while doing ordinary things, like going to the spa to get a mani/pedi, waltzing into Salon Lamaj to have my hair dyed AGAIN in my signature hue, and even simply taking a stroll through the streets of my hometown Washington, D.C.

Tadashi Shoji Lace Gown – Cap Sleeve Gathered Waist ($408 Bloomingdales.com)

And you know what, I think this Tadashi Shoji number just might do the trick…

I know it’s rainy outside, but believe me, my fabulous gown will be safe because I’ll be walking under my um-ber-rella, ella ella HEY!!! And I’ve found this exquisite little one at Bergdorf Goodman, of all places…

111th Anniversary Umbrella ($45 berdorfgoodman.com)

Now, you know music is the soundtrack to my life, so my Birthday just wouldn’t be complete without some FLYYtunes!!! And since NAS is a fellow Virgo, and his new CD, Life Is Good, is on point like Stacey Adams, I’m going to have to watch his new video BYE Baby…

Ladies, for a little eye candy, check out Aaron Hall in the background. Still sporting his cane and suit, and still looking good as ever!

Listed above, are just a few things that I’d just love to have for my 35th birthday, but the one thing that I wanted most of all, ironically, is the exact thing that I’m sitting here doing right this minute, and that is writing this post!!! I’ve been away for a few months styling several photo shoots, building my brand, and working on a few things that I’ll tell you about later, but now that things have slowed down a bit: I’M BACK…

We’ll still talk each week, but I’ll post everything here on this page, that way, you’ll have an easier time accessing it. You know the routine: Luxury, Lyrics, and the Pursuit of FLYYness…

Oh yeah, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!

Ladies Night

Oh Yes It’s Ladies Night, and The Feeling’s RIGHT. Oh Yes It’s Ladies Night, OH WHAT A NIGHT!!!

On Saturday evening, I attended Salon Lamaj’s Ladies Night, and what a night it was! WE HAD A BLAST. The food was divine, (see the HAUTE cupcakes below!)

Salon Lamaj Ladies Night Cupcakes

drinks served by incredibly buffed waiters; good girlfriends hugged and mingled, all while some of the hottest tracks melodically flowed through strategically placed speakers and filled the room! There were also a host of services that were offered during the event. Several vendors were on site offering goods and the following services: massages, tattoos, manis and pedis, as well as, clothing and jewelry sales. Members of the Salon Lamaj team were also in attendance with their talents on display: hair by Jamal Edmonds, make-up by Leiloni Cooper, and haute couture beads by Sincerely CoCo owner, Chrystal Butler.

Hair Extraordinaire, Jamal Edmonds, Styling Hair During the Ladies Night Event

There’s a lot of work that goes into hosting an event of this caliber, but it also takes a lot of work to get dressed for it, as well. With pictures being taken at a moment’s notice, and others being flicked without your knowing, be sure to dress in clothing that you look great in, no matter the angle of your body in the photograph or the position in which you are sitting or standing. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? No worries, read on, I’ve listed six steps to being the FLYYest Bell of the Ball!!!

Step 1, is to find the best dress. Locating the best dress can be a little tricky, but identifying styles that work well for your shape is the key. If you are short, select a short dress. A long one will simply dwarf you. For those plus size women, like myself, select items that fit you properly. Keep in mind, that dresses with full or baby-doll cuts will add girth. However, those that fit too snug will make you look bigger too. The key is to find items that fit you just right! For those of you who are seeking to achieve an hour glass shape, select garments that fit well and then simply add a wide waist-cinching belt to your look. Push-up bras and pads provide the illusion of a fuller bosom for ladies with smaller breasts.

It's ME!!! I'm Wearing A Classic Sheath Dress and Heel Less Pumps. And YES, the shoes are extremely comfortable!!!

Step 2, is to select a pair of killer shoes. Shoes say everything that the dress does not. They also speak the last word for your look. It is fashion suicide to simply think of shoes as some lazy afterthought! Now, you will always find me in a platform peep toe with a six inch heel. That is what I’m most comfortable in, and any shoe that I wear will definitely be edgy, glamorous and on the cutting edge of the current trend. My style is Glam Rock, and that is what my entire look says! It is your duty to find a shoe that does the exact same thing for your look. Whatever shoe you decide to wear must pair well with your dress because it is utterly important that you have one solid and succinct look, from head to toe. And speaking of killer shoes, click the Things That SLAAY ME tab to see what I have featured there…

Step 3, is a fierce hand bag. Ladies, ladies, ladies, I cannot say this enough times: PURCHASE A CLUTCH!!! There are so many events that you will attend over the years that the expense of a great clutch will pay for itself 100 times, over the years. Your clutch should say as much about your personality as it does your look. I’ve featured a few cute ones on the In The Bagg tab

Step 4, is stunning jewelry. While we are definitely smack dab in the middle of the gaudy “Basketball Wives” large earring trend, they are not the best selection for each of your looks. While they work well for casual day-to-day outings and errands, some of them do not work well for your more upscale appearances and events. Conversely, I want to mention that a nice large pair of hoops is always a welcomed addition to add some spunk to an otherwise plain little black dress. Keep in mind there are also lots of trendy chandeliers, tassel and even great studs to choose from! I love a huge cocktail ring on the first or middle finger. Don’t stop there, you can even wear a couple on the same hand. Think of those haute beads that everyone is wearing for arm candy. My girl Chrystal Butler can definitely customize a set for you in any color or style. She’ll even personalize your charms!!!

Haute Jewelry Designer, Chrystal Butler, Owner Sincerely CoCo

Step 5, is natural looking make-up. Ladies, be sure to select foundation and concealer that is the right color for your complexion. Your skin is darker in the summer months than it is in the winter ones, so you will probably need to change your product color soon. Eye shadow and lip color are also expressions of you, but there are definitely some rules that you should adhere to when applying your make-up. One of which is that if you do a bold eye, then do a muted or neutral lip, and vice versa! If you prefer to have your make-up applied by a professional or would like a few tips, my good girlfriend and celebrity make-up artist, Leiloni Cooper, is the person to see. She is available for in home consultations and travel, as well.

Celebrity Make-Up Artist, Leiloni Cooper

Step 6, is the Sensual Fragrance. Now this is the final, and perhaps the most important step because your perfume wafts ahead of you as you enter the crowd, it also lingers as you leave them. I have a fragrance for the day time, and I have a separate one for night. While both are eau de parfums, they are my signature scents and I always wear them. I treat them as the ultimate finishing touch to my look, and you should too!

Follow these rules and everyone in the room will be asking: Who’s That Girl???

Now, ladies aren’t the only ones who have to Bring It during Ladies Night. Fellas, you guys have to be on point as well! Click the FLYY Guy tab to see a few tips for you.

While music is not necessarily the focal point of the event, it definitely plays a major part in the ambiance and mood. This video is a tribute to the Salon Lamaj event.

SHORT Steps to A Stylish Resolution

Old folks will tell you that every journey starts with that first step. I’ll tell you that “just doing it” is not as easy as Nike makes it out to be. You can always come up with some reason why you should not move a muscle and just stay where you are currently sitting. The only problem is you will not progress, you become stagnant and you miss out on infinite possibility!

That said, I decided to go for a walk Downtown, last week. I walked along Pennsylvania Ave for several numbered blocks, but this particular day, I took short measured steps. I noticed the small things around me. Of course, I had my music blasting, but instead of rap music, I decided to keep listening to the Mary J. Blige station on Pandora.

Gucci Fiat 500

As I was leaving Starbucks, I noticed a black Gucci Fiat 500 parked along the curb. I walked up to it, and snapped a picture. I also took a moment to look inside of it. What I saw, was the possibility of my owning one. Now, this was a major moment for me considering I drive one of the biggest suv’s on the road. And my other ride is a V-8, as well. Needless to say, I absolutely shocked myself!!!

I continued on my little trek and as always, I noticed each and every person’s entire outfit. As I saw looks that I admired and others that I’d loved to re-style, a fleeting thought breezed through my mind: I WANT TO WEAR SHORTS THIS SUMMER! I must say that I was actually taken aback by this revelation because I have not worn shorts since the 90′s, and back then I was wearing “Daisy Dukes”. Needless to say, with time (AND gravity), those are no longer an option, but I’d love to rock bermuda, cargo and camo shorts with all sorts of caged booties, six-inch platforms and even several pairs of flat jellies.

That said, I’ve found several cute pairs of shorts that we all can wear!

Pink Tuesday…SooFlyy Reloaded

This week, I’m dedicating Uponflyy.com to Nicki Minaj’s brand new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded! I’ve been listening to the album non-stop today, with brief breaks to listen to Scarface’s The Diary: It’s Goin Down Tonite…Yeah, I know, two entirely different directions, but I’m a music fan, so if the lyrical content is there and the flow is tight, then I’m all ears!!!

For me, music and fashion go hand in hand like a great bag and shoes, so when I heard Come On A Cone and Nicki said: “When I’m sitting with Anna, I’m really sitting with Anna. Ain’t a metaphor punchline, I’m really sittin’ with Anna”…I thought I was going to loose it. She SLAAYED ME with right then and there!!! You know Anna Wintour IS FASHION!!!!

Listening to song #3: I Am Your Leader featuring Rick Ross and Cam’ron reminded me of the days when Killa Cam was having a major pink moment. Now, I know that some of you guys have a hard time with maintaining your masculinity while rocking pink, but it’s actually quite sexy on a super masculine man. Besides, Cam’ron is from Harlem World, and you know those guys are the flyyest. Still not convinced? No worries, click the FLYY Guy tab to see what I have for you!

Click the flyyTunes tab to see a video from Nicki’s new album. BEWARE: Nicki’s persona may be crayola colorful, but somehow her lyrics and lack of clothing just don’t translate to G rated appropriateness!!!

Although Nicki’s video is not appropriate for kids, the items featured on the Pint-Sized SuperModels tab are.

The Blue Print (3)…

The Motivation in me, is them telling me what I cannot be…OH WELL!!! Blue is a power color. It symbolizes strength, stability and intelligence. It’s calming, like the water that runs through the ocean. But it’s also cool like the level head you need to push through adversity in order to accomplish your goals.

Blue is a consistent source of motivation for me. I am a Virgo, so quite naturally blue is my favorite color!!! Blue is also one of the leading colors in this season’s trends.

This video is one of my absolute favorite songs on the Blueprint 3 album: Young Forever. This song is the perfect combination of lyrical content and energy. It’s Raining… Trends

Ok, so it’s the beginning of April, and we all know that with it comes lots of rainy days. The good news is that rainy days, do not at all, have to be DREARY ones! In fact, I make a special effort to look my best on those days we experience torrential downpours! I know it may sound crazy, but think about it… Don’t you almost expect everyone you see to look as though they’ve just braved a monsoon??? You know with messy hair, haggard clothing and rain soaked shoes. Well, I find it stylishly refreshing to arrive to my destination looking FLYY as ever with not one single hair out of place! This week, we’ll talk about ways to get you ready for the inevitable arrival of April’s Showers.

Start with an ultra stylish bucket hat. Gone are the days that we associate bucket hats with the cuddly little looks of Paddington Bear! I love Burberry’s modern approach, as well as Eddie Bauer’s trendy departure from that ole’ bucket hat tradition.

You know, hats are not the only things that can keep your hair dry and frizz free in the rain. In fact, because my head is so small, (and I tend to resemble “Cousin It” from the Addams Family when I wear hats), I actually prefer to rock a scarf and oversized sunglasses on rainy days!

Arriving At My Destination Dry And FLYY!!!

Now all you need is a little jacket to keep you dry from the elements! I was immediately drawn to the shape of this jacket. Can you believe it also has a hood???

Having the confidence to wear an animal print dress is great, but for those who are a little more conservative I’ve found two pairs of shoes that allow you to participate in the animal print trend, just in a little less flashy manner! Neon colors are also the rave, so you can imagine how excited I was when I saw these two that combined both animal prints AND neon colors!!!

What caught my attention was not his good looks, rather, it was his Flyy Street Style! Although he was wearing a fitted black tee, black bubble vest, black and orange fitted cap, army green cargo’s, black Burberry eyeglasses and a black and orange wrist watch, my eyes immediately went to his feet. I loved that he actually selected galoshes for that misty night. But the actual shoes themselves slaayed me!!! I love those gorgeous little Tretorn Strala Vinter Klar galoshes.

Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of FLYYness

I’ve been on a serious Pursuit of Flyyness!!! So much so, that this week’s edition of UpOnFLYYDotCom is jam packed with every single thing that simply SLAAYS ME! It’s like every time I’d find one thing that I adored, something just as spectacular would show up…

First up, was June Ambrose, at the New York Screening of her new show “Styled by June”, which premiered last night, (Monday, March 19th), on VH1! I simply ADORE June Ambrose! She is THE Celebrity Stylist whose taste making has changed the dress of Hip Hop…FOREVER! Her style is impeccable, and believe me when I tell you: SHE IS SOO FLYY!

Now this is exciting news because DVF brings a wondrously hued and glamorous patterned pallette to this year’s spring collection. I love that the pieces work well together, or with those already in your child’s closet. Click the Pint-Sized SuperModels tab to see more…

So, after that huge high octane fashion rush that I’ve listed above, I began to think of other ways that the regular person could go about getting noticed. If not for their insane fashion sense, then maybe for their immeasurable talent doing something else. I mean really, lots of everyday people are acheiving their dreams each day, and they need to get noticed NOW. And the best way to get your business or product noticed is by enlisting the services of a marketing or public relations team. Soooo, this week’s Flyy In The City tab features a full service Marketing and Public Relations agency: MPR Group, LLC.

Now after that brief stint in reality, I lifted right off into outer space, with huge anticipation of seeing Lil’ Kim on BET’s Rip the Runway, which airs on Wednesday, March 21st at 10 p.m. I was soo pleased to find a little preview of her performance!!! Click the link below to see it…

The Boomin’ System…

The activity of setting our clocks forward suggests that we are well on our way into the warm temperatures of the Spring season! With this, comes the inescapable feeling of jet lag, the innate need to lose that last 30 pounds in time for Summer, and oh yeah, the excitement of trying the latest bright colored warm weather trends!

Spring’s arrival also affords me the opportunity to ride with my windows down and music cranked up to the highest decibel possible! I actually look forward to long rides with my boomin’ system because it is during that time that I can just blast the music, get lost in my thoughts and become as creative as possible. Needless to say, I actually get some of my most stylish ideas when I’ve zoned out to a great rap song.

Debo Wayne OG Soul Vol. 1... He's from S.E. D.C. This CD is Outstanding
That said, I’m so excited about this week’s Flyy In The City feature: Debo Wayne. Debo Wayne is not only a rapper, but he produces his own music, and it is his sound and authentic rap delivery that caught my attention. You see Debo Wayne’s OG Soul Volume 1 is an album that I can listen to for the entire ride without skipping a song. He has a way of vividly telling a story through his raps, where I can see the entire thing happening. It’s like they are so real that I can even clearly see the exact street where his stories are taking place. Did I mention that he’s from the D.C.??? Check him out on the Flyy In The City tab!

Click the flyyTunes tab to see the video that first inspired Young Ambrey to rap…

The last time, any of us was into polka dots was probably in the early 90’s when Kwame’ was rocking them, along with his high-top blonde-tipped fade! Weelllll, as with anything they are back now and just as cute as can be. Check out what I’ve found for your little ones on the Pint-Sized SuperModels tab.

With warm weather comes plenty of sun filled days. You want to look your best, and also protect your eyes. Take a peak at what’s In The Bagg…

Fellas before you head to the mall to pick up the latest spring trends, breeze by the Flyy Guy tab to take your look to the next level!

Now, you already know that I love a little music. And Kanye West is one of my favorite rappers, but it’s not his music that has him uponflyydotcom this week, it’s his fashion! View his Fall Winter 2012 line on the Things That Slaay ME tab…

Girl Power

I am often inspired by ladies who rock out in fields that are traditionally held by men. This week’s inspiration came from an episode of TV One’s Unsung featuring Sheila E.!

Sheila E.

Sheila E. is talented and absolutely stunning, but it’s her impeccable work ethic that simply slaays me! This lady is married to being the best percussionist and drummer in the business, and it is exactly that particular stock and character that sets her apart from her male counterparts.

Check her out in out in her the video for the Glamourous Life…

There’s just something so FIERCE about a girl who beasts out in a profession that is heavily dominated and traditionally enundated with men. Can you believe she drives this car??? I mean really it’s sitting pretty on 22′s…
Drea's Grand Marquis...Sittin' On 22's
That said, I’m so pleased to have the opportunity to feature Arndrea Marie Butler, a tattoo artisit that owns AMB Signature Ink. She’s uponflyy.com, and she’s Flyy In The City!!!

Confidence is the most important ingredient for Girl Power, and I’m doing all I can to ensure that my daughters have as much of it as possible! On Saturday, I took my oldest daughter to get her first haircut. Check her out while she’s Sneaking Around in her new shoes on the Pint-Sized SuperModels tab…

Stomp Into the 90′s…

Growing up in UPTOWN, DC in the 90’s afforded me many opportunities to be around some of the FLYYest folks ever! As I look back, I remember the days of shopping with my older cousins and looking through their closets of high end fashions. I remember begging one of my cousins to let me carry her Marc Cross bag to school “just one time”, and at 9 years old, you already know that her answer was NO!!! I remember just playing in that same cousin’s Etienne Aigner Riding Boots in multiple colors, as well as, her floor-length leather trench coats in colors that matched her riding boots. I had another cousin who is just a year older than me, that had several pairs of Bamboo Earrings that she would wear to our Jr. High school two pairs at time, with rings on 8 fingers (until the day she decided to trade them all in at Nationals for just one big diamond ring!!!). I could sometimes wear one pair of her earrings while we were in school, as I was not allowed to wear the huge Door Knockers, at home. In high school, I was working in the mall at a store called Merry-Go-Round, and dressed like a girl, but I was still more or less a tomboy. However, I was still heavily into fashion. But when I got to Howard in 95, IT WAS ON!!! It was there that I was on my own budget and purchased my first MCM bag. It was $585 and I spent my entire paycheck for that purchase. I will never forget the feeling I had while I was on my way to Bloomingdales in White Flint Mall. I remember being more than excited as I rode the Red Line train back to Fort Totten Station to go home!!!

Remember This Flyy Girl Right Here??? My Very 1st MCM Bag! The Start of A Beautiful Relationship!!!

Since then, I’ve accumulated several original MCM handbags that I’ve collected from those years in the 90’s! If you follow me on Twitter (@FeelMyFlyy), then you know that I’ve been totally enamored with carrying my MCM Suzie Wong bag (paired with Timbs) for the past month. Weeeeelllll, I guess this little phase is gonna last a bit longer than I expected. This week, I purchased two more pieces, (while I was doing a little Vintage Shopping) to add to my already vast collection. See Below.

Vintage Shopping. MCM Backpack. My Summer Piece...

More From My Little Vintage Excursion...Another Summer Piece!

And yes, you may notice these bags are both white. I’m excited because I usually carry my Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM in Damier Azur from Memorial to Labor Day. Buuttt, something tells me that that will not be the case this year.

From the looks of things, it seems as though I am not the only one who can’t get enough of MCM! I found several pictures of celebrities rocking this brand too! I guess the old folks were right when they said: What Goes Around, Comes Around! This 90’s trend is back and it’s definitely here to stay.

Lauren Taylor, Star of the Week...

Remember Cristina Thomas a.k.a. Tina tha Barber??? Well, after my interview with her a few weeks ago, she invited me to take a tour of her closet, late last week. And while I knew that she had a great sense of fashion and impeccable personal style, I was amazed to see that she is also an avid shoe collector. I mean she’s a Bona Fide Sneaker head!!!!! Her shoe game is on 100 thousand trillion, so I just had to post a little sample here…

Vintage Fila...Yeesss Tina!!!! These are the business!

Vintage Fila: Side View...

And finally, I was hired to style a young lady who was headed to the Diggy Simmons Concert, on Sunday. Check out the Pint-Sized SuperModels tab for a few of the looks that I pulled for her…

While out on my Style Gig, I found that my mini client was going to need a major accessory…And no, it was not earrings, a necklace, or trendy little bracelets, as I had already pulled those for her! What she needed was just a little something to carry her lipgloss, house keys, cell phone and mirror in. Click the In The Bagg tab to see a few handbags for your little ladies…

I know you guys have seen that show on MTV: My Super Sweet 16, which features extremely expensive birthday celebrations for teens who are throwing big bashes to celebraate??? Weelll, I found a company in our area that throws that same level of event for your child, but on a more realistic budget. Click the Flyy In the City tab to read more about Soiree Si Vu Play!

It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye…

It's So Hard To Say Goodbye….

It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye…

Saying Goodbye is hard in and of itself, but bidding the Final Farewell to a Legend. Simply Unthinkable…On Febraury 11, 2012, esteemed singer Whitney Houston passed away. And while this week’s edition of UpOnFlyy.com was to primarily focus on Valentine’s Day, I just had to have my own tribute to the late songstress.

Now, one thing that is totally undeniable about Whitney Houston is her gift of singing. I mean she will shut the whole show down with her vocal abilities! Remember that 1991 Super Bowl performance??? That rendition of the National Anthem still ranks as one of the best renditions EVER!!!

We are all saddened by this significant loss, so much so that LL Cool J opened the 54th Annual Grammy Awards by stating that “We’ve had a death in our family…So, at least for me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman who we loved, for our fallen sister – Whitney Houston.” Jennifer Hudson sang “I Will Always Love You” in tribute.

Needless to say Whitney Houston’s talent truly slaays me, and I’m deeply saddened to see her gone. Waayyy to soon! Please click on the Things That Slaay Me tab to view my tribute to Whitney Houston…

I also managed to write a few pages on Valentine’s Day. There’s a very sexy song from another HUGE and talented singer: Chaka Khan. To see her video and hear her serenade you, please click the flyyTunes tab.

Red Skinny Jeans are all the rave, but lots of folks ask me just how they are supposed to be worn. Click the Pint-Sized Supermodels tab to see ideas on the trend for your little ones!

Last week, I listed several ideas for Valentine’s Day gifts that cost less than $100. This week, I’m back again with a few new ones still listed at the same price point. So click the In The Bagg tab to see the new stuff!

Finally, I found a hot new service that travels to your home. I like it because we all like to entertain, but I never thought to hire a service…of this type! Check out the Flyy In the City tab to see just what I’m talking about…

A Round of Applause

A Round of Applause…

One of the most profound lines in HipHop is:

“You could have been anywhere in the world, but you’re here with me. And I appreciate that…”

~Jay-Z

I not only agree with that line totally, I live my life by it. I appreciate every single person in my life and I recognize emphatically what each one contributes to it. That said, I want to recognize one of my good friends. He’s not only supported me in each of my endeavors, he’s believed in me at the times when I did not believe in myself. Always there with a listening ear and answers to each of my many detailed questions, Jamal Edmonds truly could be anywhere in the world, but he’s ALWAYS here with ME. And YEP, I Really Appreciate That!

On Friday, February 3, 2012, Jamal opened the new location of Salon Lamaj, and I could not be more proud of him! As my mentor, he’s shared many lessons with me, among them is FOCUS:

Follow

On

Course

Until

Successful

And like any good mentor, he leads by example! It was FOCUS that lead Jamal to fulfilling his latest dream, which was to open his new Salon. The new location is huge and is equipped with many little luxuries to keep his clients happy while they are having their hair styled. Now, the Grand Opening is still a short time away, but I just had to give you the exclusive on just ONE of the many trinkets he’s had installed just for you…

Political Platform…

Republicans aren’t the only ones running on platforms these days.  Theirs are political, mine are 6 inches!   And as different as ours may seem they really are quite the same. Both of our platforms tell you exactly who we are. We both tailor our platforms to the audience we are speaking to.  And…the most important thing about our platforms is that they are both like American Express cards: We never leave home without it!!!
That said I wanted to take a little time this week to discuss shoe selection. If you think of shoes as the foundation (or platform) of your look, then you will remember the importance of selecting the right shoe to complete your outfit.  For example, I hate to see the ladies downtown with their best suits on but then they totally desecrate their look by throwing on a pair of clunky sneakers…for comfort!  I know, I know, you guys are cringing right now and saying: “Soo Flyy, everybody is not like you wanting to wear those high heels all the time. I just want to be comfortable while I’m working and walking down the street!”  To you guys, I say it is not about living in extremes of either high heels or sneakers. It’s definitely about the medium.  You know ballet flats,  or kitten heels or BALLET FLATS!!!

Whatever you decide to wear for comfort, please remember that you are not invisible and that people definitely see you.  They are forming an opinion of you based on your look, and your shoes are not some after thought.  They are the platform of your look…

By the way, my name is Soo Flyy and I wear 6 inch peeptoe platforms MOST DAYS. I relax in extremely edgy wedges by Jeffrey Campbell.  Click my “What’s Your Flyy” page and tell me all about your flyy!

P.S.  I’m just tryin’ to change the color on your mood ring. Reebok. Baby, You need to try some new things. Have you ever had shoes without shoe strings? What’s that ‘Ye? Baby, these heels… ~Kanye West
